Naval Station Pearl Harbor is a United States naval base on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Pearl Harbor was established as a U.S. Naval Base in 1908, and remains a vital part of the U.S. defense establishment today. Pearl Harbor is a national historic landmark because of its essential contribution to the rise of the U.S. as a major power in the Pacific and the crucial role it played in World War II, beginning with the December 7, 1941 attack. It is located about 8 miles from downtown Honolulu.

Karen Rasmussen joined the U.S. Navy after graduating with highest honors from Artesia High School in California. After graduating from boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland, she was then stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She was assigned to room with Sharon Melander, who eventually became Karen's Maid-of-Honor when Karen married while still in Hawaii. Karen and Sharon have remained life-time friends forever there-after and some of those visits are also posted on this website.
