Karen worked
where she was allowed to softly listen to the radio while working, and
she often won prizes by being the 9th caller. She actually earned about
$100 a month. Sometimes she even won for her co-workers, because she
was over her award limit.
But the best prize she won was a trip for two to the 22nd Annual Country Music Association Awards show at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. The prize included airplane fare, hotel, a balcony seat at the awards show, and entry into the private party afterwards where some of the Country Singers made appearances and posed for photos with them. It was amazing, to say the least. Karen had to claim the value of this trip on her Income Tax form. |

Below: CMA letters
made of ice. The ice sculptures and champagne glass with balloons floating
towards the ceiling were the centerpieces on the buffet tables. |

Below is a view of the entry into the grand ballroom at Opryland Hotel. There were lots of tables with food and drinks. Every time Karen tried to eat or drink something, she would hear a big commotion that meant a "star" just walked into the room, so she put her drink down and tried to get a photo. None of the "stars" stayed very long, so she only managed to get a few photos. |

NOTE: Charlie
Pride came into the ballroom with his "people" and
quickly circled the area, but never stopped for a photo with anyone.
That reminded Karen about the time she was at a state fair somewhere
and Charlie Pride was singing on a stage. Whenever anyone came close
to the stage to try to shake his hand, he backed up. So Karen Duquette
will never become a fan of Charlie Pride. |
