Lee
and Karen Duquette
on their 39th ever Segway tour with
a stop at
some giant badminton birdies

PLUS the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden
4800 Rockhill Road
Kansas City, MO 64110 - June 26, 2025
(call 816.932.1200 for the garden hours - on this date it closed at 7
p.m.)

The
guide only took a few photos of Karen and Lee Duquette on their Segway
tour, and only because Karen really insisted that he do so. Most of the
tour time was spent off their Segways at the garden (also shown below),
even though that was not what Lee Duquette thought he was paying for.
It was a big disappointment that they did not get much Segway time for
their money. (The garden photos are below the Segway photos on this page)

Here
are some sculptures of some giant badminton birdies or shuttlecocks as
they are apparently referred to in Kansas City. In 1994 the Nelson Atkins
Museum of Art commissioned a sculpture from Claes Oldenburg and Coosje
van Bruggen. They built four giant birdies around the lawns of a museum.
Each shuttlecock is eighteen feet tall, weighs 5,500 pounds,
and has a diameter of 16 feet. Each one is situated at a different angle.
Three lie on one side of the building, and the beginning shuttlecock is
at the front entrance. |

The Segway tour did include a bit of the city, but the guide did not stop
long enough to take many photos. |
 |
 |
Most of the time was spent OFF their Segways at The Ewing and Muriel
Kauffman Memorial Garden, although the guide did not really let them
explore most of the garden, just the parts that he wanted to talk about.

The Segway guide told Lee Duquette about the resident cat, so Lee took
time to pet the cat. Karen took as many photos as possible instead of
listening to the guide. |

The
Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden serves as the final resting
place of the Kauffmans. Mr. Kauffman passed away in 1993, and Mrs. Kauffman
passed away in 1995. |
As already stated
on this page, the above photos were actually taken while Lee and Karen
Duquette were on a Segway tour. They had to park their Segways nearby
as Segways were NOT allowed in the garden. The guide did NOT take Lee
and Karen through the entire garden, just a small part that was of interest
to him. Lee listened to the guide talking, while Karen took the above
photos. But Karen really just wanted to be on the Segway. So NO, NO, NO,
they would never take this Segway tour again, and they will NOT recommend
it, even though they enjoyed the short time they had on the Segway. They
like riding Segways more than they like history and listening to a guide
talk.
