Lee
and Karen Duquette,
The Two RV Gypsies
at West Jetty View Park (The Wedge)
2300 Channel Road
Newport Beach, CA 92661

After finding some free street
parking, Lee and Karen Duquette took a short, relaxing, walk to West
Jetty View Park, located at the end of Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach,
California. The park is small, but the beach is large. Swimming at West
Jetty View Park Beach can be dangerous because the same jetty-beach
triangle that creates big waves can also create a strong rip current.
The waves at this location are large, especially when conditions are
right. Local expert surfers hang out here and ride the wave called “The
Wedge.” |

There is a long jetty at the
entrance to Newport Bay that sticks out from the beach and the reflected
wave energy creates a huge swell – sometimes up to 30 feet high! Body
surfers, surfers, knee boarders, and body boarders have been using this
man-made barrel wave for many years. However, there were not any surfers
here on this date. But the scenery was relaxing.
And across the way, was a small inlet where people could swim, and
a staircase back up to safety. |

Below: Watch out, little bird,
here comes some BIG waves. It was fun watching the bird quickly run
away when the wave got close to it. |

Then Lee and Karen Duquette,
the two RV Gypsies, took a short walk down to the beach area. |
|
Hmmmm! An interesting shape in the sand. |

Below: Karen Duquette went
closer to the water to get some interesting close-up photos of the waves. |

Meanwhile, Lee Duquette took
some photos of Karen Duquette as she allowed only her feet to enter
the very cold water. She quickly learned to hold her skirt up as the
waves attacked her. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
"OOHHH
- COLD", yelled Karen Duquette when the very cold water came
upon her. (That is why Lee Duquette seldom goes near the ocean waters). |
