MOUNT WRANGELL - LAKE WILLOW, ADJACENT MOUNTAINS & A MOOSE IN THE ROAD |
| Mount Wrangell is still an active volcano - a shield volcano. Mount Wrangell's mounding bulk formed 200,000 to 600,000 years ago from lava flows building layer upon layer. There are four major mountain ranges here. | |

| Most of the mountains you see here (although they are not clear today) once had the characteristic shield shape that Mount Wrangell still retains. Older than Mount Wrangell, these volcanic mountains, some formed nearly five million years ago, are showing their age. thousands and millions of years of glacial sculpting and erosion have carved and cut the shields away, leaving the appearance you see today. | |

| Willow Lake, located at the base of Willow Mountain, is a beautiful shallow water lake in South Central Alaska. Beyond the lake is the world famous Wrangell Mountains. | |
