The Sydney Opera House is located on Bennelong Point, surrounded by the waters of Sydney Harbour. It is situated between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove. It is NOT located on a river, but rather on a natural harbour. The structure actually sits on a peninsula projecting into the harbour. The Opera House uses water from the harbour in its heating and cooling system. The design was intended to contrast with the deep blue of the harbour. Its length is about 183 to 187 meters (600 to 614 feet) in length. It is 120 meters( 394 feet0 wide at its widest point and covers a total area of 1.8 hectares (4.4 acres). It opened on October 20, 1973.In 2007, The Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
